Automotive Applications of TactonicTM Sensors

Mechanical Controls in automobiles are prone to failure over time and due to wear and environmental contamination. Tactonic sensors provide a durable solid-state solution to center stack, door panel, arm rest or steering wheel controls. Tactonic sensors are translucent and work well with Haptic actuators to provide the feel of mechanical controls. Unlike projective capacitive controls, they can be operated with gloved hands and under any environmental conditions. With the additional pressure capabilities, they provide a richer set of control possibilities



Innovative automotive interaction is possible by making any surface within the car an active touch area. One of these areas is the rim of the steering wheel. Any part of the wheel can be used as a track pad, so from any grasp position, the free thumb may be used to control dashboard or center stack display interaction without requiring the driver to move their hands from the driving position. This allows the monitoring of user grasp to detect number of hands on the wheel, loosening grip indicative of the driver falling asleep, or tensing of the grasp indicating driver stress.
